A Journey Through Culture

A Journey Through Time

The Ari tells us that in the beginning, the divine light was too powerful for the initial vessels of creation to contain, causing the vessels to break and the divine light to fragment. The scattering of cracks, fragments, and sparks of divine light around the world is why the world is in a state of disharmony, and evil can enter. This sets the stage for tiqqun olam (restoration of the world).

But what about those beautiful cracked vessels? Doesn't their imperfect nature reflect the dynamic world we must enjoy so naturally? Well, they are Wabi Sabi, of course. Through contemplation and imbuing with purpose, we can elevate the simple and earthly — clay, fire, stone, and metal.

"The heavens will always remain heavens. But the earth we can elevate and make heavenly." - The Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

Wabi-Sabi is about embracing the transient and imperfect nature of life and existence. Everything in this world ages and weathers with time. Why should we surround ourselves with complete and perfect objects and spaces? Why should we be the only thing in our homes that contort and age with time?

We believe that a mitzvah (good deed) object gains holiness the more it is used. That wear is not damage, but the imprint of the mitzvos performed with it.

In an age where most families don't have heirlooms pre-dating the Holocaust, it is never too late to start thinking about curating beautiful, natural, and storied Judaica that will not just bring peace to you, but your descendants as well.
